Deadgirl

, by B.C. Johnson, is a light paranormal fantasy directed at the young adult market. Lucy, a typical lovestruck teenage girl, goes out to the movies and gets herself inconveniently killed by muggers afterwards — right after her crush asks for exclusivity! Only she doesn’t stay dead. ramifications of her new existence while retaining her new boyfriend and escaping a crazy light that keeps trying to kill her (for good this time) keeps Lucy on her toes from the first chapter. Why is she alive(ish)? What or who wants her dead? Is Zack still interested in dating her?

The internal monologue Lucy keeps up during the whole book is very entertaining, and I personally felt it was pretty realistic. The world is well thought-out and obviously exists beyond Lucy’s experience so far. There are consequences to her choices, some unknown even by the end of the book, but hinted at by little tidbits of information that may indicate a sequel …

Although marketed to young adults, I would hesitate to recommend this book to anyone under 16 or so. It’s fairly dark and disturbing in places. Also, any adults not interested in a stream-of-consciousness mind-dump from a 15-year-old will be better off skipping this one.

I rate this for 16 and older on the Aardvark scale for an assault that implies attempted rape, and there is also some violence and trauma both to and by the main character.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in order to review it.
