Since reviewing ‘Omega’s Shepherd,’ I have received the opportunity to read and comment on a revised first book for that renamed trilogy, ‘Stewards of the White Circle.’ The work that husband and wife team JT Brewer has put into tightening up the story and perfecting the ending scenes has paid off tremendously.

The story in Calm Before the Storm

is just as enjoyable, but the plot moves faster and the ending is more satisfying.

James Omega is a college biology professor with a past — a past he is trying to evade by coming secretly to teach at Colorado State University. Only, as we soon discover, evading his past is secondary to his goal of finding the Shepherd, a young man with a great mission. Michael Johns and Anna Dawn Hamlyn soon end up at CSU as well, guided by something they can’t quite put into words.

Michael is a senior biology student who finds himself growing jaded by endless dissections and dry lectures, and wonders when he will finally be able to work in the field with live animals and real situations. Professor Omega is the reason Michael fell in love with animals, and continues to show him that he should not give up on that dream. Anna Dawn is a botany major, and she quickly finds a home at CSU as Professor Omega’s assistant. She plays the cello, is impeccably organized, and banters delightfully with Omega.

Although their initial encounter is less than auspicious, the possibility for romance between Michael and Anna Dawn is soon deliciously apparent. Omega slowly helps each of them reach for their full potential, and at the end of the book we are promised that the next installment will hold yet more revelations and a life-changing encounter for each of them. As the time grows near for Omega to reveal his true identity to Michael and Anna Dawn, we realize that their destiny holds the key to not only their future, but the entire world’s.

Meanwhile, we find out that the

calling of the Shepherd is part of a drawn-out spiritual battle. The forces of evil are not just standing by! Garrin Cross, his minions, and his master are making their own preparations for the fight. Cross also has a hidden past and a vengeful spirit that refuses to be sated.

This book is a pleasure to read. The dialogue, the characters, the descriptions — they all blend together perfectly into literature that reminds me of my favorite meal, all the flavors well-balanced. I am impatiently awaiting the sequel!

I would recommend it to anyone looking for a complex, well-developed fantasy read. Because this book contains themes of spiritual warfare, demonic influence, and physical violence in addition to non-descriptive sexual situations, I rate it appropriate for children 15 and older on the Aardvark Scale.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in order to review it.
